Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia
Can be classified according to whether the
autoantibody reacts with red cells best at body temperature ( warm antibodies )
or at lower temperatures ( cold antibodies ) .
Warm reacting type
Warm antibody haemolytic anaemias associated
with one of the following : lymphoma , chronic lymphatic leukaemia , systemic
lupus erythematosus and other autoimmune disorders .

Treatment
Most patients with warm
AIHA respond to large doses of corticosteroids .
Splenectomy will produce
remission of haemolysis in about 50 % of patients .
Immunosuppresive drugs ,
as azathioprine or cyclophosphamide may be helpful if haemolysis cannot be
controlled without high doses of steroid .
